About Global Platform Tanzania
MAMBO! Welcome to Global Platform Tanzania!
Global Platform Tanzania was officially opened in August 2010. The platform is a collaboration between the Training for Change unit in ActionAid Denmark and our training department at MS-TCDC in Arusha. Our main focus at the Platform is youth and what we call Global Citizens' trainings.
Besides Global Citizens' training we have other training activities including language and governance courses and skills based training courses.
The Platform also serves as a meeting place for a number of local youth groups and external conferences, workshops, meetings etc.
Tuesdays4change
We are now starting up our Tuesdays4change events. The events are for free and everyone can join. We will start this sesons with 7 events focused one the Tanzanian Youth, called Youth4change. For more info, read our invitation letter.

Philosophy and working principles on the Platform
All our courses take into account the local context and are specifically designed to accommodate the needs in Tanzania. This is also the reason why we offer tailor made courses. Furthermore, our courses are building on participatory methods and the principles of learning-by-doing (action learning) meaning that participants acquire knowledge and skills through direct experience of carrying out different assignments. Thus, courses are a mixture of group work assignments and lectures.
Besides our cooperation with MS-TCDC, we collaborate with ActionAid Tanzania and various partners in the region including Femina HIP, Tawla and Hakiardi.
Training facilities
The Platform consists of two major buildings, one with classrooms and workshop areas and the other with a guesthouse. The Platform's training facilities include three large classrooms for 15-30 persons and a number of smaller rooms for office use, workshops and group discussions. Wireless internet access, a computer area and a photocopier are available. The Platform has a garden, an outdoor area with bandas and a sitting area where lunch is served on weekdays.
The guesthouse can accommodate 20 people in 10 comfortable rooms. There is also a kitchen, balconies and a sitting room with a TV. Gender separated accommodation is possible.
For booking of training facilities and guesthouse rooms check out our brochure here.
Where is it?
The Platform is placed in Dar es Salaam in Upanga area; close to the burstling city centre and a short drive from the beach. Dar es Salaam is located in a quiet bay off the Indian Ocean coast and the climate is charactarised by high humidity and relativly stable temperatures throughout the year.

Life at Global Platform Tanzania
A few statements and stories from earlier participants:
I learned so much from the ‘you learn as you do’ approach. I have not only learned to see things in a broader, global perspective, but I am also able to put the tools and skills I learned into practice. Since the course I have mobilised, initiated and is now facilitating an open Coffee Bar where young people get together and discuss politics and daily life experiences. I feel I have been empowered to make a difference in my community!
Joseph Ochieng, volunteer at St. Johns Community Centre, Kenya
Global Change Autumn 2010
On my way to the Global Platform in Tanzania, I almost didn’t board the bus, as I had to leave a quite needed job. At the Platform I discovered how badly I have always wanted to do something to bring change in my hood. I discovered that I could actually do that, and here I am doing something I have yearned to do: Working with young people, making them believe and work toward a better world. All thanks to the three months at the Platform.

Global Change Autumn 2010
The course has made me a powerful and skilful campaigner and an advocate of a hunger free world and injustice. The trainers are well experienced and really powerful in their fields, so make the best use of them!

Practical Information about Global Platform Tanzania
Passport and visa
To enter Tanzania you need a passport that is valid at least 6 months beyond the visa expiration. You need to ensure that you have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for your visa and entry / exit stamps.
You also need to apply for a tourist visa. We recommend that you apply for a visa in your home country to avoid delays on arrival. Note that some nationalities, including East African citizens, do not require a Tourist Visa for entry.
Health
Seek medical advice before travelling to Tanzania and ensure that all appropriate vaccinations are up to date. You can see what kinds of vaccines and medication you need on the webpage of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the US government, wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/ or Statens Seruminstitut at http://www.ssi.dk/Vaccination.aspx. Please be advised that Tanzania requires travellers arriving from countries where yellow fever occurs to present proof of yellow fever vaccination.
Safety
Dar es Salaam is generally a safe and friendly city. By far the most common crimes are muggings and petty thefts, thus you should take care of your possessions when you are in crowed places such as markets and on the bus. Also, you must in particular take your precautions in the following areas: Coco Beach, Kariakoo Market and Ubungo bus terminal. In general do not walk around on your own at night but take a taxi. Beware of illegal taxies – they have yellow plates whereas legal taxies have white number plates - as there have been incidences of robbing.
Dress code
Tanzania is fundamentally a conservative society. Although these days in Dar es Salaam you occasionally see people sporting more avant garde examples of western dress, as a general rule it is best to err on the side of caution in your choice of clothing. Neither topless nor nudity is allowed at beaches. Short sleeve shirts, shorts and trousers for men are sufficient. For ladies, short sleeve blouses, slacks and skirts are ideal though in the touristy places such as Arusha and Dar es Salaam you may get along with shorts (not too short) and trousers.
Language/useful phrases
The official languages in Tanzania are Kiswahili (or Swahili) and English; Kiswahili is regarded as Tanzania’s National language. There are more than 120 tribal groups many of Bantu origin. In Zanzibar and Pemba there is a strong Arab, Shirazi and Comorian influence.
Greetings are very important in Tanzania, and if you can get the hang of two or three of these then you are half way there already!
Hujambo! Mambo! – Hello!
Habari za leo? - How are you today? Nzuri - Good
Habari za nyumbani? - How are things at home? Salama - Peaceful
Habari za kazi? - How’s work? Safi - Fine
Mambo Vipi? – How are things? Poa - Cool
Karibu - Welcome
Asante - Thank you
Baadaye – see you later
Kwa heri – goodbye
Hamna shida - No problem
Sawa - O.K.

A video from our Global Platform in Dar es Salaam
Farmers, Pastoralists and Activists gathered in Dar es Salaam on World Food Day. They focussed their discussions on the how land grabbing is undermining food security in Tanzania and what must be done about it. The MS Global Platform Tanzania demonstrated the problem of bio-fuels taking food from the hungry and took the message to the streets.
The event called for a stop to land grabbing and for assistance to go to small scale food producers.
